This letter seems to be a kind of defense. Someone posing as for to be apostles and also attacked Paul's apostolic authority, had come into the Corinthian church. Therefore Paul sent Titus to Corinth, to clarify these issues. Based on what Titus could report back to Paul, Paul wrote this letter.

The apostolic
authority is explained and justified in the context of the central message that God himself was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself. This is the great message of consolation from God through Paul's apostleship. Jesus Christ became poor to give wealth to sinners. By Christ's wealth will the church be involved in giving.
